Nilambari Lotus is a hand painted silk organza saree with lotus motifs. It measures 5.5 metres by 45 inches and is sold as a saree only, with no blouse piece. The organza is light and crisp, so the painted flowers sit cleanly on the fabric and the pleats hold their shape. It suits festive days, puja, haldi and sangeet functions and weddings where you are a guest. Sundarii Handmade makes it in Indian villages.

Why a painted lotus looks different from a printed one
A block or screen print repeats the same shape across the fabric. A painted motif is drawn by hand, so each lotus differs a little in size, pressure and shade. That is why your Nilambari Lotus will not match the photos exactly, and why the listing notes that slight unevenness in the prints is normal. Look closely at the petals. The small differences are what show it was painted by an artisan.
The lotus has long stood for purity in Indian culture, because it grows out of muddy water and still opens clean. It is also one of the easiest flowers to paint on a saree, since its petals fan out in a clear shape.
Why organza suits hand painting
-
Smooth surface: painted colour sits cleanly on organza, like a drawing on thin paper.
-
Crisp body: pleats stand up and the pallu falls in a clear line instead of clinging.
-
Light weight: the saree feels light, so you can wear it for a long festive day.
-
Fairly sheer: wear a petticoat in a matching or slightly deeper shade so the colour looks even.
This saree has no blouse piece
Nilambari Lotus is sold as a saree only. You will need a blouse, either one you already own or one you buy or stitch separately. The blouse worn in the photos is for reference only.
| Mashru or silk blouse |
Adds body under the light organza. The Riwayat Mashru silk blouse is shown as a pairing on this page. |
| Plain blouse in a colour from the painting |
Pulls one shade out of the lotus motifs and keeps the look planned. |
| Contrasting solid blouse |
Makes the painted body look lighter and fresher. |

Draping tips for organza
- Use smooth safety pins for the pleats, and take off rings or bangles with rough edges, because organza can snag.
- Add fall and edging at checkout. Organza frays easily at the hem, so edging helps the saree last.
- Keep jewellery simple. Jhumkas or oxidised silver studs are enough, because the painting is the main feature.
When to wear it
- Festive days and puja
- Haldi and sangeet functions where you are a guest
- Daytime weddings and receptions
- Spring and summer events, when you want a light saree

Care instructions
Dry clean only. Fold the saree in a soft muslin or cotton cloth with a sheet of plain tissue between the folds, and change the fold lines now and then so creases do not set. Keep perfume and deodorant off the painted areas, and do not rub the paint when you pin or adjust the saree.
Good to know before you order
- The saree has no blouse piece. The blouse worn in the photos is for reference only.
- Screen settings change how colours look, so the painted shades may look slightly different in person.
- International shipping is free on orders above INR 30,000. See our shipping policy page for other charges and delivery times.
